With Justice’s Retirement, SC Supreme Court Could Return To All-Male Bench

In contrast to news in Pennsylvania of the formal appointment of the state’s first female chief justice, with the retirement of Justice Kaye Hearn, South Carolina’s Supreme Court is poised to have an all-male bench of justices for the first time in 35 years. Hearns herself was only the second woman to ever serve on the court after her election in 2009, Bracey Harris reports for NBC News

“I have always felt that it’s important for both lawyers and litigants to look up on the bench and see someone that looks like them,” Hearn told NBC. “I do think it’s concerning.” Hearns’ retirement is mandated by state law now that she’s turned 72.
