Ukraine Expands Government Power To Regulate News Media

[ad_1]

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed a new law that expands the government’s power to regulate media groups and journalists in the country, Brad Dress reports for The Hill. The Kyiv Independent wrote that the controversial statute means that the Ukrainian National Television and Radio Broadcasting Council can essentially shut down news sites that aren’t registered with the agency.

Drew Sullivan, an editor for and co-founder of the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project tweeted about the decision: “Unnecessary. Unwarranted.  Stupid. @OCCRP will ignore the law and will continue reporting as it does in Russia. You’re in bad company Zelensky.”
