U.S. Successfully Negotiates Brittney Griner’s Release Through Prisoner Swap

After months incarcerated in Russian prisons, the United States has negotiated a prisoner swap for WNBA star Brittney Griner. Griner was released Thursday as part of a one-for-one prisoner swap in the United Arab Emirates, exchanged for the release of arms dealer Viktor Bout, CBS News reports.

Biden tweeted early Thursday morning, following a call with Griner from the White House accompanied by Griner’s wife and administration officials: “Moments ago I spoke to Brittney Griner. She is safe. She is on a plane. She is on her way home.” President Biden confirmed the United States’ ongoing commitment to securing the release of another American imprisoned in Russia, retired Marine Paul Whelan, who was arrested four years ago on espionage charges the U.S. has refuted.
