Simon’s weekly wrap: Finding value opportunities amid fears

I chatted with Sameer Singh, a research analyst at Old Mutual Wealth Private Client Securities, about Mondi. It has sold its Russian operations and, while this was an important part of its business, it still has strong cash-generating assets and Singh makes a compelling case for the stock being very undervalued (read transcript).

Sanlam has made an offer for a majority stake in AfroCentric and I spoke with Deryck Janse van Rensburg of Anchor Capital about it. The 600c offer gives a good indication of value for this small cap that has almost four million medical aid members (read transcript).

I spoke to Simon Fillmore, CEO of Independent Securities, about opportunities in the current market. He especially likes big tech as they have strong balance sheets and are very cash generative. Meta, parent company of Facebook, is one that has been sold off and now sits on a single digit PE (read transcript).

Coal has been booming and this raises questions about the transition to clean energy. I spoke with Tasneem Samodien from Old Mutual Wealth Private Client Securities about this trend. While she believes this trend is probably short term in nature, she doubts that we will meet the 2050 net-zero emissions target, saying 2060 or later is more likely (read transcript).
