San Jose City Council Looks Toward Moving Police Misconduct Investigations To Independent Auditor’s Office

San Jose’s City Council will run a test on a new process that would move police misconduct investigations from inside the department to the city’s independent police auditor, Brian Howey reports for the San Jose Spotlight. On Tuesday, the council voted unanimously to add an investigative branch to the auditor’s office, kicking off a process intended to lead to a multi-year test period that would move misconduct investigations outside the police department.

The San Jose Officers’ Association says the move goes beyond the council’s authority and runs contrary to the city charter. More details about the dispute, the initiative’s legal status and its proposed role can be read here at the San Jose Spotlight.
