Russia Tightens its Anti-LGBTQ Laws



Russian President Vladimir Putin expanded restrictions on LGBTQ speech by signing multiple amendments on Monday, including laws preventing the promotion of same-sex relationships and suggesting that same-sex relationships are normal Ivana Kottasová and Anna Chernova report for CNN. The new bans also expanded a 2013 law that made it illegal to spread LGBTQ information to minors and now makes it apply to all ages.

The bans also include stiffer penalties for spreading LGBTQ sentiments and will be applicable in most settings, including through media, the internet, and advertising. Fines are now as high as $6,370 for “LGBT propaganda.”
