Los Angeles DA Will Not Charge Officers Who Killed Dijon Kizzee

The Los Angeles District Attorney announced Tuesday that it will not file charges against the Sheriff’s Deputies who killed Dijon Kizzee in a police shooting in August 2020, Frank Stoltze reports for the LAist.

The deputies who shot Kizzee “reasonably believed” that lethal force was “necessary to defend against a threat of death when they initially fired their weapons,” the LA DA’s Justice System Integrity Division wrote in a report last week. Kizzee was stopped in 2020 for riding his bike on the street against traffic, but when flagged by the deputies Kizzee allegedly ditched his bike and ran until he was stopped and, after being struck by one officer, dropped his handgun on the ground and attempted to pick it back up. Deputies shot him as he allegedly reached for the gun. Surveillance video from the scene is obscured by a wall.
