Indiana Sergeant Guilty of Obstruction of Justice, False Report In Assault Case

In Muncie, Indiana, a former sergeant pleaded guilty Tuesday to a charge of obstruction of justice for knowingly writing a false report. Joseph Krejsa, once a sergeant for the Muncie Police Department, admitted to writing a false report after reviewing bodycam footage of an assault of an arrestee in order to cover up an incident of excessive force where officers under his command severely injured a civilian.

Officers in Muncie ordered a compliant suspect to the ground but, in response to an insult from the man, one officer used his knee to ‘drop his bodyweight’ onto the suspect’s neck and head, crushing his face into the ground. The suspect was tased, handcuffed and then kneed twice more in the face, sustaining significant injuries. As part of his plea, Kresja testified that he knew he was attempting to influence any investigation into the officers’ conduct with his false report. Kresja is the fourth person from Muncie PD to plead guilty to charges in this case.
