U.S. Attorney for the District of Idaho Josh Hurwit has announced a new COVID-19 Fraud Task Force to address rampant fraud taking advantage of federal pandemic relief programs within the state. The task force and its attached prosecutors will “work jointly to hold accountable criminals who unjustly enriched themselves at the expense of taxpayers by defrauding economic aid programs,” Audrey Dutton reports for the Idaho Capital Sun.
The task force will include investigators from a number of federal agencies including the IRS, FBI, Social Security Administration and Postal Inspection Service. The programs hit with a wave of fraud cases include the Paycheck Protection Program and specialty programs like the Emergency Rental Assistance Program and Coronavirus Farm Assistance Program, among others.
