A French Police officer faces trial after security footage shows him beating and urinating on a 14-year-old French teen during last year’s coronavirus lockdown in Paris, Lorraine Mallinder reports for Al Jazeera. The case is one of many police cases of abuse that often target Black and Arab men in the country.
“The word of the police officer is always stronger than the victim,” said Omer Mas Capitolin, a founder of one of the six NGOs that raised a lawsuit against the French government for systemic discrimination by police officers. “The French government does everything to deny the systemic nature of the problem. Black and Arab youth are targeted on a daily basis. They are not considered fully fledged French citizens. There is a political will to stigmatize an entire segment of the population.”
