Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’s office has taken responsibility for sending 50 migrants by plane to Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts, escalating a tactic in which Republican-led states have shipped busloads of migrants to liberal bastions to protest the significant rise in illegal immigration under President Biden, reports the New York Times. Desantis’s office said the two flights were part of a $12 million state program transporting undocumented immigrants to so-called sanctuary destinations.
Martha’s Vineyard, which only has one small homeless shelter, suffers from a shortage of affordable housing and nearly no job opportunities as it enters its off-season. It is now facing extreme challenges in coping with the surprise influx of migrants. Local community groups, churches and restaurants are all pitching in.
