Sen. Jon Ossoff’s bipartisan Prison Camera Reform Act was signed into law by President Joe Biden on Tuesday. The law requires the Federal Bureau of Prisons to upgrade outdated and broken security camera systems and is supposed to ensure all facilities have the coverage necessary to protect the safety of incarcerated people and staff, according to a recent press release.

Department of Justice’s Inspector General, Michael Horowitz testified that outdated and broken prison cameras have hindered the prosecution of cases involving assault and civil rights violations, “action by the BOP on its camera deficiencies is absolutely critical to the BOP’s ability to ensure the safety and security of its institutions for inmates as well as its employees,” said Horowitz.
