DOJ: Philly Corrections Sergeant Assaulted Detainee, Falsified Reports

[ad_1]

A now-former sergeant for the Philadelphia Department of Prisons pleaded guilty in federal court to violating a detainees civil rights and to a charge of falsification of records related to the use of excessive force on a detainee at Philadelphia’s Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility. The sergeant, Ronald Granville, admitted in court that he and four correctional officers assaulted a cooperative pretrial detainee while he was naked during a stripsearch, causing injuries to his face, ribs and genitals that required he be hospitalized. Then, Granville and his co-conspirators collaborated on false reports about the incident.

“While those behind bars may have lost their freedom, they retain their humanity — and their civil rights,” FBI Philadelphia Special Agent in Charge Jacqueline Maguire said in a Department of Justice announcement on Tuesday. “Battering a compliant detainee is indefensible, and the FBI is committed to seeking justice for the victims of such violence and other criminal misconduct.” Granville is scheduled to be sentenced on April 25.
