As artificial intelligence continues to grow, the need for accurate and precise models has become more important for critical decision-making. AI is helping organizations unlock unstructured data, which can be challenging without the right tools.
Nvidia Corp. and Dell Technologies Inc. have partnered to provide innovative AI solutions, according to Bob Crovella (pictured, left), director of OEM solution architecture at Nvidia.
“We live in a world of unstructured data; structure is something we add later … the world that we see and the world that we experience is unstructured data,” Crovella said. “With AI and its ability to naturally absorb unstructured data and make intelligent reason decisions is really a breakthrough, and that’s what Nvidia’s been focusing on for at least a decade or more.”
Crovella and Anthony Dina (pictured, right), director and global field chief technology officer of unstructured data solutions at Dell, spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Savannah Peterson and David Nicholson at SC22, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed the importance of unstructured data and how Dell and Nvidia enable AI to tackle the chaos involved for better insights. (* Disclosure below.)
Having an ‘AI center of excellence’ comes in handy
Even though complexity thrives in the AI problem-solving space, having an internal “AI center of excellence” helps take that complexity away, according to Crovella. Marrying high-performance grade scalability also triggers consistency.
“The center of excellence is an example of how do I take this incredibly complex problem and simplify it down so that the real world can absorb and use,” he said. “And that’s really what Dell and Nvidia are partnering together to do. That’s really what the center of excellence is — it’s an idea to help us say, ‘Let’s take this extremely complex problem and extract some good value out of it.’”
For AI to move out of the realm of science experimentation and into pragmatic and trustworthy usage, Dina believes enterprise-grade policies and technologies should be applied for consistent outcomes. Tackling the chaos prompts application at scale, he explained.
“So I’ve noticed there’s a pattern of three levels of maturity,” Dina stated. “The first level is having an experience, proof of value, getting stakeholders on board, and then just picking out what technology, what algorithm do I need? Over time, people start actually making decisions based on it; this moves us into production. In the last stage, we get hungry to replicate those results to other use cases, throwing even more information at it to get better accuracy and precision.”
Through accelerated computing, Nvidia enhances the ability to glean insight or reason from unstructured data, according to Crovella, who said that AI is going to revolutionize nearly every aspect of computing, problem-solving and programming.
“I would say it’s all about AI, and Nvidia is a leader in the AI space,” he said. “We’ve been investing and focusing on AI since at least 2012. Accelerated computing that we do at Nvidia is an important part of it.”
Since AI promises to take advantage of tools for enhanced problem-solving, incorporating unstructured data is the way to go, according to Dina. So, it’s vital that companies don’t just depend on structured data only.
“The world has been based on analytics around rows and columns, spreadsheets, data warehouses,” he stated. “We’ve made predictions around the forecast of sales maintenance issues, but when we take computers and we give them eyes, ears, fingers, cameras, microphones, and temperature and vibration sensors, we now translate that into a more human experience. That kind of data — the sensor data and the video camera — is unstructured or semi-structured.”
The Nvidia-Dell partnership is delivering integrated solutions to solve problems in life sciences and manufacturing, among others, Dina pointed out. The collaboration enables the curation and organization of data, as well as the incorporation of algorithms.
“We’ve been partners for many, many years, delivering beautiful experiences on workstations and laptops,” he noted. “So take, for example, the DGX A100 platform brilliant design, revolutionary bus technologies, but the rocket ship can’t go to Mars without the fuel. And so you need a tank that can scale in performance at the same rate as you throw GPUs at it.”
