Can Sports Wins in Philly Improve Crime Rates? Maybe!

After two major wins for the Eagles, Philadelphia police working the city’s overnight shift reported zero incidents for two weekend nights in a row. Police reported no violent incidents on the overnight shifts for September 19 and 20 after the Eagles beat the Minnesota Vikings, and again Oct 16 and 17 after a win against the Dallas Cowboys.

Coincidence? Maybe not, criminologists told opinion columnist Daniel Pearson at the Philadelphia Inquirer, noting that there are connections between public safety and sports. Researchers Hannah Sybil Laqueur and Ryan Copus analyzed data on crime rates in Chicago and found that crime reports decreased significantly when the Chicago Bears were on TV and even more during the Super Bowl.
