Buffalo Shooter Radicalized by Online Content: Report

The New York Attorney General’s office alleges that several online platforms played roles in radicalizing the alleged gunman behind the Buffalo mass shooting, reports Jonathan Franklin for NPR. Payton Gendron allegedly not only used online platforms to plan, prepare and publicize the mass shooting on May 14 but was also influenced by anonymous, unmoderated websites and platforms such as 4chan, 8kun, Reddit, Discord, Twitch and YouTube.

New York AG Letitia James, who led the investigation, accused such platforms of being breeding grounds for white supremacy, warned that the graphic content of Gendron’s attack and his writing displayed there could lead to more attacks, and argued that they should be held accountable for allowing hateful and dangerous content to spread on their platforms. As a result of the investigation, both James and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul are calling on federal and state reforms to take action against online extremism and violence.
